Up in Flames Last summer, Ray Dakin was at home in southern California. It was a very hot day. Ray was sitting in his bedroom and watching TV when he suddenly smelled smoke. He went downstairs, looked out of the window and saw orange flames about a mile away. The forest was on fire! Ray got up immediately and called his sister, Maggie. He shouted that they had to leave the house right then. They ran outside to their car. Maggie desperately tried to start the car, but nothing happened. The thick black smoke was everywhere, and it was hard to breathe. They decided to run. While they were running, Maggie fell and sprained her ankle. Ray helped her to get up, and they kept moving. Finally, they saw the flashing light of a police car. The policemen helped them into the car and drove to a safe place. "You're lucky to be alive," one of them said. Ray and Maggie felt relieved that they were safe.
