Here is the dialogue transformed into reported speech: Mother told Pete that they had run out of vegetables and had hardly any bread in the house. She added that it was now his turn to go to the greengrocer's and to the baker's. Pete asked why they had to go shopping so often. Mother replied that the day before yesterday it was Nelly who had done all the shopping. She had gone to the grocer's and to the butcher's. Pete asked if she had. Mother said that girls were so fond of shopping. She suggested that Nelly do it today as well. Mother exclaimed that Pete had been a lazy-bones ever since he was born! She said it was so difficult to make him go anywhere. Pete asked if she wanted to make him a model boy. Mother replied that she would like to. She told him to take that bag and not to grumble. She asked him to buy a cabbage, a pound of onions, half a pound of carrots and a loaf of bread. She said that here was the money and not to forget the change. Pete asked if he had ever forgotten it. Mother replied that she had not said he had. But he was so absent-minded. Pete (sighing) said that his teacher said the same. Mother said that she expected him to be back in half an hour. Pete replied that he would do his best.
