Задание 8. Are these sentences true or false? Find evidence in the text.
1. False. Rob has just returned from his holiday and is in London.
2. True. A hurricane in Scotland caused a giant tidal wave.
3. False. The Thames Barrier protects London, not Scotland.
4. True. Many places along the British coast will be in danger if the sea level continues to rise.
5. True. The film was being made while Hurricane Katrina (2005) destroyed New Orleans, and it was released in 2007.
6. True. The summer of 2007 was the wettest in British history and floods devastated many parts of the country.
Задание 9. Your voice. Answer the questions.
1. I think it is unlikely that London will completely disappear, but it faces serious risks. If the Thames Barrier fails and sea levels continue to rise due to climate change, many parts of the city could be permanently flooded.
2. In Russia, if the sea level rose significantly, several major cities could be at risk. First of all, Saint Petersburg would be in great danger because it is located on the Gulf of Finland and has a low elevation. Also, coastal cities like Arkhangelsk, Astrakhan, and some parts of Sochi could face flooding. However, Russia is a vast country with many inland regions and mountain ranges, so most of our territory would remain safe.
3. Other consequences of global warming include the melting of permafrost in the northern regions, which can damage infrastructure. It can also lead to more frequent extreme weather events like droughts or heavy heatwaves in the southern regions, affecting agriculture. On the other hand, for a northern country like Russia, a slight warming might also lead to a longer growing season and make the Northern Sea Route more accessible for shipping.
